Status of Librarians

I was expecting a fair response... but till date i got only 4 responses.

From one mail.. I come to know that Librarians are not teaching staff but are academic staff...

But due to this difference, Librarians has to face problems at many fronts all over...

If Librarians has to qualify NET/SET at entry level, If they have to follow all the procedures needed to became a Teacher...

Then they must be consider on par with teachers and should be availed every facility at par with teachers as 6th Pay Commission has done... but State Government's decision's doesn't look so...

1. If Librarian want to apply for the post Principal, He can't apply because he has no classroom teaching experience... I think, it should be added to the laws to change the qualification needed for the principal's post and librarian's working experience shall be considered...

2. If Librarian want to do anything, where there is provision that "teaching experience" is needed... then "Librarians experience" shall also be included with that... i.e. Librarian's work experience shall also be on par with Teaching Experience...

Status of Librarians

I have a few questions....

Q. How Librarian is a Teacher ?

Q. Why Librarian should get a Teaching Status ?

Q. Do UGC or Central or State Government had ever accepted Librarian as a "Teacher" ? Had they made such provision in some Act or Law?

Q. According to section 2(34) of the Maharashtra University Act 1994, Librarian is in the definition of Teacher. But whenever anything is awarded to Lecturers, Professors by the Government(such as right to contest election, grants, salaries, study leaves, pension, retirement benefits etc.) Librarians had to request and struggle at each instance to make special provision for them. Why ?

Q. "Librarians are not engaged in classroom teaching. So their work experience is not Teaching experience" Says Laws. Your comments please?

Q. "If Librarians work experience is not teaching experience, they cannot contest for Senate or LMC elections" Recent news in Maharashtra... Please comment on this also...

Q. Further, "If Librarians work experience is not teaching experience, they cannot apply for the post of Principal". One case is there again in Maharashtra... Please Comment...

Last one...

Q. If the above three statements are true, what's the exact Status of Librarian ?

This queries remained unanswered. Hence we may conclude that somewhere there is a big question mark on the "Status of Librarians".
